Celebrate Successes

Yesterday, one of the kiddos I work with had such a fantastic speech session that I just had to pat myself on the back. He's learning to use a picture exchange communication system (PECS), where he gives a picture to communicate when he wants something. I had been trying to back off on the amount of cues I was giving him, but for several sessions, he just continued to need me to put my hand out before he would hand me the picture to make a request. Now in real life, people are not going to put their hand out in expectation that you want something. You're going to have to make your needs known without any prompts. So, I've been trying to "ignore" him, and to turn away and not look at him or give him any cues at all, as if I'm busy working, to see how he reacts to "no cues."

For a few sessions, he would just get frustrated with me. But yesterday, he got it! He picked up the picture of what he wanted from inside his communication notebook, walked across the room to where I was busily "reading," and stuck the picture in front of my face! Not just once, but several times! It was really exciting to see that progress toward independence! To celebrate, I bought myself a coke that afternoon from the drink machine at work. It felt nice to celebrate a little success, even if just in some small way.

Sometimes we get too busy to take pride in things done well. A newly painted porch. A new shrub planted in the yard. A presentation that was well-received. A new recipe that turned out to be a hit. But it's these little successes that keep us going, that help inspire us to keep plodding along toward bigger goals.

So buy yourself a coke after a good speech therapy session. Make yourself a smoothie after painting that fence. Treat yourself to a bubble bath after a long day planting your garden. Small successes bring big happiness returns.

This Made Me Happy, Too

Seriously. Really happy.

I was doing some research about what CEU programs I might like to complete this year, and I somehow stumbled upon an article about a young man with Down Syndrome who learned to drive.

Check it out here.

How very cool. I love how the mom talks about the small steps they took to get to that point. And how the young man's girlfriend thought it was so cool to go on a "real" date to a movie, being driven by her boyfriend.

What made you happy today?

Show Up

"Eighty percent of success is showing up."
--Woody Allen

So I think I have a little cold. Sore throat. A little cough. Tired. But no fever.

Since I work with preschoolers, I'm usually pretty cautious about going to work when I'm sick. And I seriously thought about calling in sick and sleeping the day away today.

But I pushed through since I didn't have a fever, and after a few minutes at work, I was feeling okay. Invigorated, even. I worked extra hard to make a connection with my sweet clients, and got some really nice progress today!

And then, after work, I had the afternoon off with my daughter. We invited a friend of hers over and had a very relaxing day of mani/pedis and artwork at home and playing at the park. And while the girls played a bit at home, I made my favorite ever easy peasy homemade pasta sauce for dinner.

I got to experience all this wonderful stuff today, because I made a conscious choice to "show up," rather than calling in sick. I could've cancelled therapy sessions and not had the reward of the excellent progress I got to see today. I could've cancelled Flannery's playdate and not had the reward of watching the cutest kids ever play at the park.

But, instead, I showed up. And, boy, am I glad I did.

Do you think it's true that "80% of success is [just] showing up?" What have you "shown up" for that made a difference for you?

Agree or Disagree?

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.
--Henry David Thoreau

I'm not sure if I agree with this statement. I mean, I know that success is usually tied to intense hard work, but I tend to think that most successful people are looking ahead at the big picture while they're working. That their focus on success is what is driving them to work so hard.

As for happiness, which I kind of use as my yard-stick for measuring my success, I really think that since I've started to "look for" happiness, it's come to me more easily. Maybe it was there all along, and I just didn't recognize or appreciate it.

Or maybe now I'm "busying" myself with working towards happiness. Hmm. I'll have to think about this one.

What do you think?
